Worm examination on horses
With the specially developed examination, you can have horse manure analysed for the presence of worm eggs.
Worms can seriously endanger the health of horses. These parasites can cause colic, anaemia, weight loss, diarrhoea and growth retardation. In the worst case, worm infections can even be fatal. You have the worm examination carried out as part of a treatment plan. Without a worm examination, a vet is not allowed to prescribe worming agents. You also use the manure examination preventively, to check whether your horses are still healthy. What does a report look like? Click here for an example analysis of the worm examination horse.
Most common parasites
With the standard manure examination for worm infections, you have the manure examined for the most common parasites:
Large bloodworm
Small bloodworm
Roundworm
Foal worm.
The manure is also checked for eggs of the tapeworm and pinworm. However, the result is indicative for these parasites. It is possible that, based on clinical indication, additional examination is necessary.
Sand and digestibility
With this manure test, you can also determine the amount of sand in the manure and the digestion of the roughage. The sand test gives an indication of the amount of sand that the horse ingests. Remember that it is a snapshot and that a horse excretes the ingested sand irregularly. The quick scan for the digestibility indicates whether the horse is sufficiently grinding the roughage. This can be a reason for dental check-up or dental care.
Easy and fast
For this worm test, we work together with HippoSupport, a specialized equestrian parasitology laboratory. This allows us to offer professional quality worm tests at relatively low costs. Horse owners and veterinarians who have this test performed for the first time have found that it is easier and faster than they were used to.
